Explanations[]

  • A katydid is a type of insect in the family Tettigoniidae.

Trivia[]

  • The script for this episode was finalized on September 4, 2003, one year before this episode was released.
  • The episode was originally set to be released on March 2005, but on December 3, 2003, since it was finished early, the release date was changed to November 7, 2004.
  • This was the first episode for several things:
    • The is the first Barney episode.
    • The first appearances of Barney, Baby Bop, BJ and the kids.
    • The first episode where Millward shaves his mustache, but it grows back again.
  • This was the only episode in the entire series to be aired on PBS Kids.
  • The numbers on Cavis and Millward's plaques are the actual birth dates of both Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki.
  • There were a few differences between pre-production and the final version:
    • There was a line after Cavis helped Emily out of the grass, Millward says "All right, Cavis. Emily is marching with you. Don't you think that she'll like that?". This was absent in the final.
    • Barney is galloping the circles and says "Horses and their riders, when the circus comes to town." was not in the script.
    • Extra dialogue between Cavis, Millward and Emily before Kristen tells everyone to come for singing the song was cut.
    • After Millward and Cavis were taken away by the Stuff-Mart, Kristen and others painted the nice circus costume and told Barney that Cavis and Millward that they got to use their Chromebooks. This results Cavis and Millward's computers.
    • Originally in the storyboards and concept art, it was going to be an entirely new model for the Sushi Chef. That was probably Hop Sing, who was mentioned in The Ballad of Little Joe script.
    • After the first practice in the circus, it was supposed to be night time, and it shows Millward throwing the top hat.
    • The concept art shows Lucy van Pelt, although she never appear in the episode.
    • It also showed Emily wore the hat.
    • The sign was going to say "Barney's Super Singing Circus", but it said "Barney's Super Circus" in the final.
    • There was a scene where two other characters (Danny and Emily) try to enter the circus, but ultimately have nothing and they fell through a trapdoor. Tim Hodge stated this was cut due to time. That scene is later storyboarded as an Easter Egg for the Trivia Questions.
    • Cavis takes the chair instead of using the wagon.
    • Tim stated in the commentary they thought on using a train, but it never came through. Brian Roberts suggested the same thing for the episode sequel.
    • According to Tim Hodge, he and the crew were debating if the story should be about perseverance or faith. They went for the latter, and used the perseverance lesson for a later episode.
  • This is first time Cavis and Millward are crying with tears.
  • There are a couple of references to upcoming films:
    • A blue Hudson Hornet can be seen right next to the wall of the circus, an Easter egg appaerance of Doc Hudson.
    • The pie appears on the table, the food was used for a later episode.
  • This episode's logo was originally meant to be "Circus and Clowns", as seen on the first teaser poster. Later, this was changed to "Super Singing Circus with Barney" in the second teaser poster, before finally getting changed to "Cavis and Millward's Barney's Super Singing Circus" in the final poster.
  • The episode premiered on October 25, 2004 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina, and was theatrically released on November 7, 2004 to positive reviews from critics.
  • Like Bob and Larry's How to Draw!, it won the Academy Award for Best Animated Home Entertainment Production.

Remarks[]

  • The Qubo broadcast of this episode states this episode was directed by Phil Vischer.
  • On the DVD and Netflix versions, the audio is only in mono. If you compare this with the original VHS, there's some sound effects that were missing in the DVD (eg. a rooster crowing in the beginning).
    • The original version of the episode with these sound effects was included on Cavis and Millward's Favorite Stories! VHS and DVD releases.
  • Cavis states that Emily has legs without pants, but as a tomato, he has no legs.
  • It's unknown how Teddy comes to life, after Emily puts away on the chair.
  • It'd be very unlikely all the kids could fit in Haman's wagon at it's size.
  • Though not technically considered a goof, Millward's mustache is larger in size in some shots.
  • Though not technically considered a goof, in "Animal Fair song, Kristen is shown holding the stick. At the end of the song, the stick disappears.
  • What does I.P.T. (Infant Potty Training) have to do with banishment to the Island of Perpetual Tickling?
    • I.P.T in this case would actually stand for "Island Perpetual Tickling", not "Infant Potty Training".

Fixed Goofs/Goofs[]

  • When Cavis is showing the blank area where the circus is, the light green turf can already be seen. At the end of the When the Circus Comes to Town, the green turf stays while the circus disappears. Later, the turf appears/disappears with the circus itself respectively.
  • When Emily announces that her family will be out of town for the circus, Millward's mustache is missing.
  • Emily's right arm clips through Kristen's top hat.
  • When Millward and Cavis are building the circus, Millward's pink tie is shown clipping into his body. Though this was fixed in the 2005 version, a goof was introduced which sees Millward clipping into the circle floor during the shot.
    • On a similar note, Millward's costume, as well the barbershop suit, flickers as he's done building the wall of the circus. This doesn't happen again in the 2005 version, likely due to the redesigned circus.
  • Kristen clips through the door frame as she walks out the front door.
  • When Cavis is painting the ceiling with the magnets (upside down), Millward backs out into the upstairs hallway and bumps into the package box. The box is not there until Millward bumps into where he is supposed to be standing.
    • The box also disappears.
  • In the original version, Cavis is missing in the shot where he is driving in his car. This was corrected in the 2005 version by having him pulling the car back at the parking lot.
  • In the scene where Cavis and Millward are walking through the curtains, he and Millward clipping into their costumes.
  • Kristen's stick twitches as she's marching around the circus.
    • On a similar note, Kristen's red jacket disappears in the shot where she is putting on the show.
  • As Emily and Danny are explaining to Cavis and Millward that they have to use one of the tools to fix the pipes, Emily is clipping through the end of the staircase until she begins walking.
    • On a similar note, she manages to lose the dark purple pants of her legs in one shot but gains it back in her next shot.
  • When Barney announces that he will present for Emily and Teddy, his line "Presenting... EMILY AND TEEEEEDDYYYY!!!!!!" is off lip-sync.
  • When the rope is first seen, there are knots on the rope, but when the rope is thrown, there are no knots.
  • As Emily offers Millward and Cavis she just wants to play with Teddy, we see Kristen throwing the stick, as she's done throwing, if you look closely on her, you'll notice that her blue shirt clips into her body before she's about to take it off.
    • Kristen's mouth clips through the poles as well.
  • During the end of the second segment, after Barney turns back into his original stuffed form, when Cavis and Millward come back to Emily to get the directions to St. Bart's Church, the lights on the rocket car don't light up on Emily's face.
  • One shadow renders too late.
